Many local business owners are just now realising the importance of search engine optimisation (SEO) in Mauritius. During the last DevCon 2019, I had a chat with a Mauritian entrepreneur who had some really good marketing ideas to build awareness around his new service. His marketing ideas were purely offline but his passion and enthusiasm urged the SEO in me to perform an on the spot keyword research.
The result? Around 6000 monthly local searches for his service with almost inexistent organic competition. He found it hard to believe this audience actually searching for what he is offering and all he had to do was to have an optimised website to present his content.
SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION FOR SME IN MAURITIUS
Most SMEs in Mauritius don’t take advantage of search engine optimisation. Perhaps some find the process too lengthy or complicated but for sure many don’t know what SEO is and the full potential of it.

But it does not have to be that way. Like you and me, many Mauritians are using search engines for most of their queries. Whether it is searching for an information, a recipe, a service or a product, many of us use a search engine. SMEs and entrepreneurs should start exploring the benefits of search engines like Google and Bing.
There are numerous supporting measures for small and medium businesses in Mauritius. There are also a lot of resources for SMEs to enlarge their marketing efforts. The Mauritius Resource Council (MRC) has conducted an in-depth study on the Use of Digital and Social Media Marketing among SMEs in Mauritius. MCB also teamed up with DCDM Research to publish a comprehensive SME Report which aims at investigating local entrepreneurial mindset, motivation and behavioral engagement.
BENEFITS OF SEO
Mauritians use Google and a lot more than you think! Keyword research show that Mauritians use search engines to find a dentist, search for a place, find horse-racing tips, buy products online, research online purchase offline (ROFO) and pretty much everything else.
Around 700 000 people in Mauritius use Google. And countless studies show that the average person with an internet access performs more than one google search a day. Yes, there is a huge potential for your brand on search engines.
